Is Your Marketing Working? Top 5 Ways to Audit Your Marketing

Data for a marketing audit

Is your marketing working for you? How do you know? The best way to find out is by doing a “marketing audit.” An audit lets you know:

  • what’s working
  • what needs improvement
  • where you can grow

A marketing audit should include these top 5 reviews:

1. Target Audience and Buyer Personas

Knowing your audience is essential and buyer personas are critical for understanding the pain points, motivations, and buying behaviors of your prospects. To audit yours:

  • Review the buyer personas: Are they based on real data or assumptions? Ensure they reflect accurate and updated information about your target audience.
  • Assess whether marketing efforts (e.g., content, messaging, campaigns) are tailored to these personas.
  • Examine your lead segmentation process: Are you effectively targeting the right industries, job titles, or company sizes?
  • Analyze how well you understand buyer journeys (from awareness to decision-making).

2. Digital Marketing Channels and Performance

Digital marketing is central to B2B purchasing. Auditing the effectiveness of digital channels like your website, social media, email marketing, and paid campaigns ensures you’re reaching your audience effectively. Your audit needs to include your:

  • Website: Is it user-friendly? Optimized for conversions (e.g., clear CTAs, forms)? Mobile-responsive?
  • Social Media: Are you engaging the right audience on platforms like LinkedIn? Are your posts attracting engagement from the buyers and decision-makers?
  • Email Marketing: Assess email open rates, click-through rates (CTR), and conversion rates. Are your email campaigns properly segmented and personalized to meet the needs of specific buyer personas?
  • Paid Media: Review the ROI on paid campaigns such as LinkedIn Ads, Google Ads, or retargeting campaigns. Are you targeting the right audience? Are the ads converting effectively?

3. Content Marketing Strategy

Content is a powerful tool in B2B marketing, especially for educating and nurturing leads. An audit of your content helps identify gaps and ensures alignment with buyer needs by reviewing:

  • Content quality: Is your content valuable and relevant to your target audience? Are you addressing their pain points and providing actionable solutions?
  • Content types: Are you using the right mix of content formats (e.g., blogs, whitepapers, case studies, webinars, videos) that resonate with your target audience?
  • Content distribution: Are you effectively distributing your content across appropriate channels (social media, email newsletters, guest blogs)? This is where I see most of my clients failing, fyi.
  • Content performance: Analyze metrics such as page views, time on page, and conversion rates from content. Are your most successful content pieces aligned with your audience’s interests?

4. Lead Generation and Nurturing Process

Generating high quality leads and nurturing them through the sales funnel is key to driving revenues – and many companies fail in this process, after the marketing hand-off. An audit includes:

  • Lead capture forms: Are your forms optimized for ease of use, and do they align with buyer interests? Are you collecting the right data from leads?
  • Lead scoring: Does your company have a lead scoring system in place to prioritize high-value leads for the sales team? Is this system working?
  • Lead nurturing: Do you have email drip campaigns and nurturing sequences? Are they working? Does the content keep leads engaged throughout their decision-making process?
  • Conversion rates: How well are your landing pages converting visitors into leads? Assess form completion rates, content downloads, and demo requests.

5. Analytics, KPIs, and ROI

Without solid analytics and KPIs, it’s impossible to gauge the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. An audit of your metrics ensures you’re tracking the right data to make informed decisions. Audits include:

  • Key performance indicators (KPIs): Identify and assess KPIs such as customer acquisition cost (CAC), lead conversion rates, and return on investment (ROI) for each marketing activity.
  • Analytics tools: Ensure your company is using reliable analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, HubSpot, or Salesforce) to track traffic, conversions, and customer behavior.
  • Reporting systems: Is your reporting process streamlined and efficient? How often and how thoroughly are you reviewing it?
  • Attribution models: Are you accurately measuring how different channels contribute to conversions? Review whether your marketing attribution model gives credit to the right touchpoints.

If you’re not focusing on your marketing results, you don’t know if it’s working. And an audit, on a quarterly basis (at least) is the best way to see if your marketing dollars are well spent – and leading to sales.
