AI is a hot topic in B2B marketing right now, and I wrote a blog post using Chat GPT to show you its writing style (at the time). But it’s been growing by leaps and bounds, so it’s important to separate reality from hype. Here’s how to navigate the AI landscape:
A. Focus on Business Problems, Not Buzzwords: Don’t get bogged down in the latest AI jargon. Instead, focus on specific AI applications that can address real challenges in your B2B marketing efforts. For instance, AI can be used to:
- automate repetitive tasks like lead scoring
- personalize content recommendations for website visitors
- analyze customer data to identify upsell or cross-sell opportunities
B. Start Small and Integrate Gradually: Don’t try to overhaul your entire B2B marketing strategy with AI overnight. Begin by identifying a specific pain point, such as lead nurturing or content personalization, and then explore how AI might be able to address it. Start with a pilot program and gradually integrate AI into your workflow as you see its value.
There are also platforms that are integrating AI into their workflow. If you built websites, for example, AI is built into WordPress tools to help on-page SEO. Start with checking out software suggestions, to see if they work better than what you’ve been doing previously.
C. Human Expertise is Irreplaceable: Even with the rise of AI, skilled B2B marketers will always be in demand. AI is a powerful tool for data analysis and automation, but it cannot (yet) replicate:
- the human ability to build relationships
- understanding or explaining complex business needs
- crafting compelling narratives.
Understand what it can be used for, and what it can’t, so that you’re not wasting your time needlessly on tasks that it can do AND you’re still working on the activitites that humans still do best.
D. Focus on Transparency and Building Trust: Building trust is paramount in B2B relationships. Be transparent about how you are using AI in your marketing efforts and be sure that AI-powered personalization is relevant, and not creepy. Most importantly, prioritize the security and privacy of customer data.
It’s likely that, moving forward, the most effective B2B marketing strategies will involve a more seamless collaboration between human expertise and AI capabilities. Marketers who excel at building relationships, understanding buyer journeys, and crafting strategic content will continue to be highly valued.
By leveraging AI to complete repetitive or time-consuming tasks, from data analysis to personalization and automation, B2B marketers can free themselves from the more tedious marketing tasks and focus on the high-value activities that drive business growth. It’s your job to stay informed about the latest trends and be sure to separate AI hype from reality.
